Autumn Berries on Sage
Autumn is a special time of the year. The light is stunning enhancing the vibrant fall landscape with deep, rich color. When we think of fall color, we often visualize the magnificent foliage of Vermont. This is when I head for sagebrush country.
Washington's Yakima River Canyon winds south from Ellensburg to Yakima. Canyon Road hugs the canyon wall yielding majestic vistas at every turn, the river is always close by.
About fifteen minutes into the Canyon from the Ellensburg end you will come across Umtanum wayside. Stop, cross the footbridge over the river, follow the trail under the railroad trestle and work your way up the Umtanum Canyon. The delicate color of sage in bloom accented with red berries is a wonder to behold.
The Umtanum Canyon is a state preserve, the L.T. Murray Wildlife Area. The canyon is home to big horn sheep, eagles and a May wildflower bloom that is absolutely stunning. You can camp here too, an added benefit.
